Presidential Message: Constitutional Right to Kill? Vote No on Proposal 2
While every election is important and every election calls upon each of us to fulfill our civic responsibility to vote, this November 4th election goes well beyond a usual election. I am not referring to the historical presidential race. Instead I am zeroing in on Proposal 2.
This election is especially meaningful with far reaching consequences because of what the passage of Proposal 2 means for the citizens of Michigan and for the future of the prolife movement in our state.
First, Proposal 2 is a constitutional amendment which will enshrine into Michigan's constitution the constitutional right to kill a fellow human being. Michigan's state constitution is a document that presently protects life. There is no right to abortion nor a right to capital punishment in our state constitution. Proposal 2 would change that through its reversal of a 1978 law that prevents killing experimentation on live human embryos. Michigan has a history of once a constitutional amendment is passed, it is never reversed.
Second, we, as a prolife movement, have a legacy to protect. We have proven through the past three referenda that Michigan is a prolife state.
1972: Michigan voters by a 61% to 39% victory said NO to the legalization of abortion.
1988: Michigan voters by a 57% to 43% victory said NO to the use of tax monies for abortion.
1998: Michigan voters by a 71% to 29% victory said NO to the legalization of assisted suicide.
Now in 2008, we are again faced with a death promoting referendum; one that this time targets the smallest and most vulnerable member of our human family, the human embryo.
Don't be fooled by the supporters of this ballot issue. Read the fine print of this proposed constitutional amendment -- 300 plus words. Embedded into those words are the loopholes that will lead to Michigan becoming the home to science without limitations, unrestricted and unregulated corporate scientists looking for patents and profits. A spokesman for this death-dealing amendment has publicly admitted the need for public (read our taxes) funding for human embryo research. And another of their spokesmen said that this first step may make citizens more comfortable with human cloning.
Over the years through education, lobbying and political action, we have been able to reduce the number of abortions from a high of nearly 50,000 per year to the present record low of 24,683. Still way too many deaths, but if Proposal 2 passes the number of human embryos who will be killed in the name of progress will be mammoth.
Help us maintain our prolife legacy by joining the thousands of others who are a part of Michigan Citizens Against Unrestricted Science and Experimentation (MiCAUSE). Go to www.micause.com to find out how you can help insure that Michigan citizens are informed to vote NO on Proposal 2 on November 4. Remember 2 goes 2 far. Vote NO on 2.
