No, Your Conscience Cannot Be Your Guide

On February 18, 2011, the Obama administration removed conscience protections from health care workers which were put in place during the Bush administration.  Towards the end of the Bush administration, new conscience rules were put in place which required institutions which received federal funding to certify their compliance with the conscience protections or lose their federal funding.

Long-standing Congressionally-passed protections for health care workers who don't want to participate in abortions have been kept in place.  The overturned Bush conscience protections also protected workers who were opposed to IVF, abortifacients and other controversial areas of medicine.

Right to Life of Michigan supports the right of health care professionals and organizations who have conscientious objections to reject participation in or cooperation with the delivery and marketing of abortion. Every person should be allowed to use their conscience as a guide. Curiously, President Obama has said repeatedly he hopes those on both sides of the issue will work to reduce the number of abortions by preventing unwanted pregnancies and by offering support to women who do get pregnant and want to continue their pregnancies. Not defending the conscience rights of medical professionals to does not work toward that end.

Letters to the editor of Michigan newspapers are a great way to inform the public, many of whom wrongly believe President Obama is actually prolife.
